Tybee Lighthouse

lighthouse from the beach
flowers at city market

our rig all set up
Friday I was up early…before 0700. Sure is quiet around here at that time. Once everyone was up we made our plans for the day. Tybee Island here we come. We Island hopped! There are many islands in the Savannah area, check out a map of the area.

Our first stop was the Lighthouse, but scores of students had just entered so we backtracked to the beach. Anne and I strolled barefoot and looked for shells. The waters of the Atlantic are cold this time of year. There were buses of students with their buckets having a good time. Some folks we’re sunbathing and a few brave souls were in the water. We brought a picnic lunch but had to eat in the car. No picnic tables and neither one of us thought to bring a blanket. Once lunch was over we headed back to the lighthouse.

Tybee Island has all the typical island shops and businesses but it is also home to the Tybee Light Station, completed in 1736. The light house is typical of lighthouses and Jim, Scotty and Anne climbed all 178 steps to the top. The museum includes all the buildings associated with the maintenance and keeping of such an important lighthouse. Three keepers we’re involved before it was updated to electricity. Read more about it, www.tybeelighthouse.org. The history of the place is interesting. Our cost was $5.00 each with the senior citizen discount.

We stopped at a few shops but the guys became bored quickly so we headed back inland. One last stop was Fort Pulaski where we got in free with the Golden Age Pass. This is an interesting Fort. Has a moat with a drawbridge, some cannon on display, interpretive displays and guided tours. I don’t have a link to post so just Google it! There’s also a picnic area and trails to walk. While driving around we saw several deer.

We headed back to our island and drove around exploring the roads we hadn’t seen. Lot’s of gated communities with posh looking homes. An aquarium associated with the University of Georgia is out here and if we have time we’d like to check it out.

We had dinner with the Scotts. We each grilled steaks, had corn on the cob and leftover onions and mushrooms. Washed it down with wine and enjoyed each others company. After we split up and we gals did the dishes, Anne and I headed to the office to use our computers. Not much fun sitting in the dark on the computer!

Once I got home I showered and Jim and I watched TV until we went to bed around 2300. We’ve been running the AC at night and we’re sleeping well. I slept until 0840 today!

Jim was up shortly after that and I decided to make pancakes for breakfast. Scotty came over and joined us. We only had plans to do things in the park today. Jim climbed up on the roof to check our AC; it makes weird noise when we run it. He said he didn’t find anything. Anne and I wanted to get hair cuts, but they couldn’t work us in today. We picked up some groceries at Kroger then came home. There’s an MS bike-a-thon going on and our truck needed a little more room to navigate the road! But the local traffic is tolerating it well.
