Did I mention that we've stayed in this area before? I can't remember how long ago it was but as we were driving south on Pisgah Highway to Stony Creek RV Park (6 sites) we passed the place we stayed before, Hominy Valley RV Park (5 sites). Both are similar, on the side of the road with only a few sites. Hominy is all gravel and looks to be long term campers now. When we stayed I don't recall any neighbors. The rates are $25 daily for Good Sam and there's no wifi. Stony Creek has hard packed gravel and stone pads with grassy sites and a creek! The trees and landscaping make it more homey. We're paying $16 a night using Passport America and we have wifi, which is pretty good with the use of our booster. We're giving serious thought to coming back next summer to stay awhile and explore the area.
What are fuel prices where you are? We've been here a couple weeks and diesel has be $3.85. Better than Florida prices!
Thursday we headed to Lexington Avenue and had lunch at Lexington Avenue Brewery. They have an interesting menu catering to the many younger people that come here. I had a Portobella Caprese Sando with fries and Jim had Hawaiian Andouille Wrap with fries. Both meals were huge! Of course we had beer! Jim got a glass of Honey Wheat while I tried the Hop Burst. He also got a sample of 1st Gear a cream ale, I thought it was good but it reminded me of a soda.
After lunch we walked up and down Lexington checking out the shops but only popping into one, Downtown Books and News. This is a real bookstore! Old, new, used, collectibles, magazines and newspapers....you name it and I'll bet they had it or could find it for you. There was scattered seating in the form of school desk chairs, a section of old theater seating and it looks like maybe two or three shops combined. A step up here, two steps down there. Real funky and both of us could spend more time in there.
Finally it was time to head back to the truck, we only paid for two hours and time was running out. When we got in the truck my phone was dead! I left with a full charge and the last time I looked at it, in the bookstore, it worked fine. After plugging it in and trying several times to make it come on (by both of us) Jim headed to a Verizon Store.
You should have seen the crowd there! We waited maybe 15 minutes to be seen and it was an easy fix. Did you know you could force your phone on by holding the on button and upper volume button? Me neither, but apparently that's what Willis did and he checked and called my phone and all was well. He said they sometimes shut themselves down...
A stop at the post office and grocery before we arrived home around 1400. Boo was glad to see us, well truth be told, he's always glad we come home! I wonder if he thinks we won't? I put groceries away and fed Boo then we both had some coffee. It looked like rain so we just stayed indoors.
Speaking of groceries, we RV'ers get to shop at different grocery stores across the nation. Have you ever popped into the Dollar General Market? Small selection of produce, meats and dairy, it's like a convenience store without high prices. I wouldn't want to do my weekly stock up there. Today we stopped at Food Lion. I don't recall shopping there before and since I didn't have a store card I got one. Saved over $6 buying things I needed...I like that!
We did get some rain! It was pretty how it just fell straight down. Didn't last long and it made everything sparkly.
We watched PBS, on Thursday they have This Old House and it was followed by Mystery. They're showing the first season of Endeavour, the second season starts June 29th so this will refresh our memory. We both like British Mysteries and look forward to the summer shows. In another week or so The Escape Artist with David Tennant starts and I want to see it. Also Hercule Poirot and Breathless

The past couple days have been wonderful! The weather has been perfect, now if we could get it to stay this way until our stay is over we'd be really happy!
Thursday Jim wanted to go to Hobby Lobby and check out Historic St Andrews. So once I remade the bed with clean sheets and did the dishes we were off. We made our purchases at Hobby Lobby then drove the short distance to St Andrews. It's on the Bay and it was fun walking around the marina and small town.
Then we stopped for lunch at Gracie Rae Bar and Grill, part of the Shrimp Boat and sat overlooking the bay watching the gulls, cormorants and pelicans. It was a beautiful day to be sitting outside drinking cold beer and eating seafood.
When we finally tore ourselves away from this tranquil setting Jim decided we needed another stop to 'check' on something....The Verizon store is a dangerous place. We checked on getting me a new phone, which we did...I now have a Droid Maxx like Jim's and apparently Chris, our son in law. We did lose our unlimited data plan (which is why I was keeping my old Droid) and our monthly bill goes up about eight bucks.
After about an hour we left with my new phone, a car docking station, screen protectors and a hands free blue tooth thingy in red. I lost all my pictures because Verizon doesn't think it's important to be able to transfer them to a new phone! There's a slight learning curve and I'm getting the hang of using this phone. It's a wee bit bigger and sensitive to touch.
Friday was another glorious day! We didn't go anywhere. Just did some cleaning and normal chores. Cooking (me) and grilling (Jim). We even ate outside because it was so nice.
We went for a walk when we finished out afternoon coffee. As I think I mentioned we are on a wetlands but we sloshed our way through the puddles and walked down to the bay. Boo was having a good time with all the new smells.
On the way back we picked up a toy football and tossed it for Boo to chase. It was almost to large for his mouth but he finally managed to pick it up and it was funny watching him march with it!
Watched an HBO (free weekend on Direct TV) movie last night and went to bed by 2230.

Rainy Day Doings
Today started out dreary. We had some sprinkles and of course it was cool. I changed the sheets out and prepared a load of laundry....what else do you do on a rainy day?
While Jim was doing the dishes Kathy popped in and asked if we needed anything from the store and within the space of two seconds Jim was asking her about heading to Barnes and Nobles. Decision made!
When John and Kathy returned we all hopped in our truck and headed out. First stop was getting fuel then we headed to St Augustine in a fine drizzle of rain. During the drive we decided on Cracker Barrel for lunch and we could use our gift cards!
Who knew the entire county would be there??? Of course the outlet mall across the street didn't have anything to do with it! We had to wait a bit before we got seated but we all enjoyed our meals. Then we headed to Camping World for popcorn...not really, but they do have free popcorn and some of us enjoyed a bag. Jim picked up something and John and Kathy looked at 5th wheel trailers. I think they like our space and I know John would like to 'size up'.
Couple more stops for us, one for coffee cream at a health store and we needed to stop at a Verizon Store to update our military status to get our discount. Since it was after 1600 Jim and I decided we needed some coffee so we stopped at The Hyppo Cafe. Three of us had some mighty fine coffee and we shared two delicious cookies.
Never did make it to Barnes and Nobles, perhaps another day..
The drive home was wet but the rain was just a nuisance all afternoon, nothing heavy.
Once home Jim took our laundry up and got it washed and I divided it up and dried it at home. A quiet evening and there you have it! Another day in the life of us...

Fort Matanzas
Our destination Saturday was Ft Matanzas but we had to make some stops along the way. The day was lovely and during the course of the afternoon I heard many people express this many times.
After breakfast and doing the morning chores we dressed and headed to St Augustine. Our first stop was Bed, Bath and Beyond. For Veterans they had 20 percent off your entire purchase so we decided to see what they had that we couldn't live without. I found some serving pieces to go with our new silverware (more on that in another post) and we found a rug that fit the front door entry...have to laugh, we don't have a back door!
Next I dashed into Michael's right next door for some crafting supplies and Horehound drops for Jim. I picked some up last time we were here and he likes them...
Next we headed to Verizon to see if the screen protectors for Jim's phone were in stock....they were.
Whew all this shopping makes you hungry! Across the street was a Carrabba's so we popped in for a wonderful lunch. Jim had Sangria and I had Chianti to drink with the delicious bread and olive oil they supply you with while waiting for our meal. Jim ordered a shrimp Alfredo dish and I had linguine with tomatoes, mushrooms, artichokes and garlic. I brought a lot home and they gave me another loaf of bread to eat with it!
Then it was off to Diane's Natural Market for some coffee creamer. I'm not sure why, but they always give me a hard time with coupons!
Now that the shopping is out of the way we headed for the coast. Driving south on A1A is always enjoyable and before long we were pulling into Ft Matanzas National Monument By the way, there is no charge to enter
After a short, free ferry ride we disembarked to tour this well preserved fort. I think this is the smallest fort I've ever seen. It's 50 feet on either side with a 30 foot tower. Only seven men were assigned here. One officer, four infantrymen and two gunners. The brochure say up to 50 men could be here during a crisis...I think it would be standing room only!

After the tour we headed across the street to the beach. there was a northeast wind blowing and the waves were pretty

After drooling over the artworks inside and outside we hopped back into the truck, heading south and stopped in at Washington Gardens State Park. No camping here but it's great for gatherings and picnics. Great park on both sides of the highway. Access to the intracoastal waterway on the west for fishing and the Atlantic for the ocean
By now we're about done for the day so we headed further south on A1A to Flagler Beach where it looked like something was happening...cars and people everywhere! We just kept driving heading west and going home.
Sunday Jim woke up with an infection in his mouth. It really looked like someone punched him and it would have been comical except he was in pain also. Still he went to work and I planned mushy foods for him to eat.
The Saints played the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football and we watched until they pulled Drew Brees from the game. We looked and looked but couldn't see Sonsearae and Chris in the crowd! They went over to New Orleans for the weekend to see the game and to have fun with friends who happen to be Cowboy fans.

running around
Jim's days off have been a blur of activity. He's been working on the honey do list, washing the truck and in between napping and enjoying the birds outside.
Yesterday we did some running around in Palatka. I needed some potting soil so off we go! First stop was lunch at Corky Bell's. We both chose shrimp, his was fried and mine was boiled ( I only ate three and brought the rest home for Jim to enjoy), a baked potato and slaw were our sides. Of course hushpuppies came with the meal and we washed it down with nice, cold mug of Shock Top
Next stop was Lowe's for the potting soil. I looked at the plants but nothing jumped in the basket to come home with me.
Verizon was next to see if we could get a screen saver for Jim's new phone. He ordered and received his Droid Maxx a few days ago and spent the entire afternoon setting it up and playing with the new features. Alas, no screen saver, apparently it's a new phone design and all the extras aren't in the market yet
Then it was off to explore. Since we got the State Park Pass we thought we'd check out the local park, Ravine Gardens State Park. http://www.floridastateparks.org/ravinegardens/ We only drove through, stopping to get out once. It's very....green...this time of year...I'm sure when spring comes it's quite lovely. There were only a few people there and I'm sure the locals use it for biking, walking and running. There are places to picnic and overlooks to view the ravine. We both agree we need to go back. Maybe take the trikes and enjoy a short ride.
Back home Jim napped for a bit. Boo and I just left him be. Dinner was yellow rice, black beans and sliced green onions. The rice and beans were leftovers, they go well together.
Watched some TV then Inspector Lewis on Netflix.
We're both enjoying the cooler weather. I'm guessing it gets into the upper 80's during the day, but dropping into the upper 60's at night. The AC isn't running all the time. Of course this means outside critters are coming in and we're disposing of them as fast as we can. One of the hazards of sitting still for long periods, the locals want to drop by and stay!

Paper
The other day I bought a couple of magazines at Barnes and Nobles and did you know they offer a paperless receipt? They just emailed it to me! I think that's fabulous....no little piece of paper that ends up in a recycle bin or land fill or ends up floating around as a piece of litter in the parking lot. I hope more stores offer this option!
I also took the opportunity to look at the Nook tablets. So many options for hand held devices out there! I have the original Nook reader, no bells and whistles. Do I need another one? Not really...I have an iPad (original, 1st edition) that I no longer carry everywhere because I'm afraid the battery will run down and I won't be able to recharge it (issues with the plug and cord). I really miss not taking it everywhere because with all the apps I can read, play games and with WiFi can get online. Do I need another one, not really. But I can dream
Thursday I was up a 0600...for years this has been my normal rising time, but because I haven't been sleeping well getting up later has been the norm lately. Hopefully this changing seasons will be a new beginning for me. Not that I like getting up when it's dark! But the longer I stay in bed the more my back hurts. And it does give me quiet time for reading and hearing the birds as the sun comes up.
Around mid morning the clouds started dissipating and the sun came out! I wanted to make a run to Lowe's for some plants so we changed into our city clothes and headed out.
I did managed to find a potted chrysanthemum I liked and chose a couple marigolds to flank it. Also bought a tomato plant, a pepper plant and a dish of succulents Our hanging pot of fuchsia looked pitiful so I bought some impatiens to replace it. Stay tuned for pictures!
We also bought a new bird feeder, squirrel proof according to the label...we shall see. Along with some bird seed and suet cakes we're all set to watch the birds and squirrels
Next stop was Verizon, we get a 15% discount for Jim's military service and we had to show his ID card and send in paperwork to continue getting this discount. Not a big deal and after a few minutes we were good to go. I like saving money, how about you?
Next stop was Subway for lunch. I had a $10 gift card and we took advantage of the $5 foot long and along with a soda and chips we indulged ourselves. Can't recall the last time I had real soda
Our last stop was Publix for a few groceries. Back home Jim unloaded the truck, placing bagged plants all over the patio and I took care of the groceries. Couldn't help but notice it was only 1300....Jim took a nap
Once he was up we both headed outside to take care of the plants and I did some re-potting. I filled the new feeder and hung it out while Jim set out seed in a couple other feeders Then it was time for cold beer....have you ever tried a fruit flavored beer? I had an Abita Strawator, Strawberry Harvest Lager. Quite nice on a warm afternoon.
Our Thursday night Pizza/Pot Luck was quite pleasant. This front that went through left us with a cool breeze and lower temperatures.
It was so nice that when we got back home we opened the windows and turned on the exhaust fans. We haven't done that in the last few months! Then we showered and settled in for an evening of TV watching. Shortly after 2100 we had to close up the house and turn on the AC...it was nice to have the fresh air moving through the house once again

Spaghetti Dinner with Friends
DROID....that's what my new phone says when I get a new text message.....DROID! :)
Jim and I both got new phones this week. The Droid X by Motorola. You see Anne wanted a new phone so the four of us went to the Verizon store to check out what's available. Jim and I wanted to price the various phones, options and check out internet options. Well the three of us ended up with the Droid X, poor Scotty has to wait until February before he can get one. for the past two days we've been learning how to use our phones. Jim now has texting. Having a 3g phone is fun!
Tonight we went to dinner down the road at Diana and Johns' place. Karen started inviting everyone to a spaghetti dinner and while I didn't count all of them there sure were a lot of people and the gathering! Spaghetti and meat balls along with various breads, salads and desserts. I took an apple salad that had cranberries and walnuts. It was tasty enough to be a dessert.
When I got home from the dinner there was a big box on the patio! A Christmas present from Sonsearae and Chris, A gift basket from Eden Foods. Packed in the lovely basket are the ingredients for Italian pasta dishes......Yum!
Today was cool and cloudy and during our dinner the clouds cleared out and we even had some sunshine for awhile. Tonight the temperature will dip into the low 50's/upper 40's. Great for sleeping with the comforter!

Las Cruces, New Mexico
We were in no hurry to leave this morning as our trip was only 70 miles to Las Cruces. So we had our coffee and breakfast. Then we slowly packed up and left around 1030 this morning. The drive over the mountains was beautiful and uneventful.
We were all set up in Sunny Acres RV Park www.sunnyacresrv.com by 1300. Anne and Scotty were already here having gotten their coach repaired earlier today. The mountains from this side are worthy of pictures so we'll need to get some when we're out and about tomorrow.

Once the repair was made we walked around the mall mostly for the exercise. I did pop into Chico's and we got some vitamins from GNC. After we left the mall we stopped at Arby's for a bite to eat. Then checked out Walmart for fuel. But no fuel. Then Jim stopped at a Verizon store. For a Tuesday afternoon it sure was busy. He checked out the phones then we left.
Back home we sat outside enjoying the afternoon. Jim had wine while I had a cup of coffee.
Felicia and Frederico look like they wanted Jim's wine! Not sure how long we sat there with Boo before Anne and Scotty returned from their outing. They sat with us for a bit then Anne and I went for a walk around the park.
Haven't seen any iris lately and these are about the last of them in bloom here.
