Seeing the Sights in Vermont

New Hampshire too, but I'm getting ahead of myself.  Last week Jim and I headed out to find the Longest Wooden Bridge in the World (their words).

If you remember your geography, the southern part of Vermont isn't very wide and we had to drive east for a bit to find this bridge on the Connecticut River which is the border between Vermont and New Hampshire.

First we had to drive over some mountains taking scenic highway 4 through Killington, a big ski destination during the winter.  All this beautiful scenery reminded us of the trip we made two years ago with Anne and Scotty.  So in honor of that trip and fond memories we stopped at Long Trail brewery for lunch!

Very nice building with a store, bar and eating inside or outside.  The choices outside were under a canopy or out in the open by the river.  We chose outside by the Ottauquechee River.  When we first sat down we thought we'd made a mistake as the breeze was a little chilly.  But we ordered some white chili that warmed us up.  Of course we each had a draft beer and sandwiches.  The food isn't anything special, just pub food but very tasty.

Soon we were on our way.  At one point we were stopped by construction, can't remember if it was before we ate or afterwords...no matter the view was great.

Right after Taftsville we took highway 12 south to Windsor so we could see this bridge.  Drove right by the road to it!  Turned around and saw the itty, bitty sign and crossed the Connecticut River as there wasn't a place to stop in Vermont for pictures.

I had to cross the street in order to get the whole bridge in the picture!  It is huge and if you read about it (click on picture, it should open and be a wee bit bigger) you'll see this structure is the fourth one in this location.

Our next stop was north of here so we drove in New Hampshire along the east side of the river until we needed to cross back into Vermont.  At White River Junction we picked up the interstates and hopped off on highway 5 so we could go to King Arthur Flour.  While Jim had coffee and dessert I shopped.  Well mostly I looked.  I certainly didn't buy everything I wanted to because where would I store it?  I do order from them a few times a year.  But on this day I restrained myself.  Then I joined Jim in the lounge area and had some coffee and a macaroon.

On our way home we retraced our route and stopped in Quechee at a touristy place that had free samples of Cabot Cheese where we sampled quite a few yummy cheeses...we skipped the distillery, maybe next time!

Our next stop was Taftsville to get a better look at their covered bridge.  We were both impressed with the trusses and the river flowing under it

Also on this Highway is Woodstock.  How should I describe this city without sounding like a snob?  But it's a small city with attitude!  A lot of posh shops and restaurants seemingly out in the middle of nowhere.  I'd like to go back and explore.  The population is just over 3000 and I'm not sure what industry there is but they have some money judging by the type of shops and cars we saw.

Of course we can't explore anything right now.  Last Friday our truck was towed to a repair shop.  At least we hope so, we've not heard if it arrived.  The driver wasn't even sure where to take it!  Cell service out here is practically nil and the young man couldn't pull up his map.  Jim showed him so cross your fingers and pray for us!

Boo is pretty much the same.  His meds are working and he sleeps mostly.  Especially during the night.

Hope you didn't mind all the pictures

Goodness Me!

We're still here...daily life goes on.  A couple things to write about...I'll catch up soon

My Pink Amaryllis is blooming again.  This bulb is worth every penny I paid for it.  Only one stalk this time with four flowers...It bloomed last April and it was gorgeous!

I've been trying to crochet more often.  Habits!  I get to playing the games and forget about everything else.  This will probably be a shawl that will go with anything because of the colors.

Had to take Boo to the vet, he was just having a difficult time and I was baffled as to what to do with him. Keeping us up all night, pacing and some scratching.  Turns out he has gotten into something that gave him a case of giardia, so now he's on several meds to clear up this intestinal problem and help him (and us) rest.

Meeting up With Friends

It's always nice meeting up with friends, especially when it's been years and years!

We met John and Bridget in 2009 at an RV-Dreams Rally in Kerrville, Texas.  We were drawn together by this and the fact that we each had a Mobile Suites RV.  Since that time we've kept in touch via social media and we even tried to meet up in Jacksonville but I'm not sure why that didn't happen.  I seem to recall something about rain.  No matter because one of the nice things about this lifestyle is opportunities will crop up.

John and Bridget happen to be in Essex Junction Vermont to work the Escapees RV Rally and they took time yesterday to meet up with us in Middlebury Vermont.

John and Bridget

We met around noon and since it was lunch time we took them to Two Brothers Tavern where we've enjoyed lunch before.  It was ever so much fun chatting and catching up.  It was delightful to hear Bridget's accent!  I love a southern accent and have not heard one in quite some time.  You see, they're from Mississippi and that southern drawl sounds like home to me.

After lunch we strolled around and we showed them the river and waterfalls.  We went into a couple shops and then decided to head to A and W so the guys could get a root beer float.  Bridget opted for some ice cream as the afternoon was warming up and I had a small root beer.  More talking and then it was time to say goodbye. More hugs and saying we need to meet up again we parted.  They driving north and we headed south.

Beauty Is All Around Us

You just need to open your eyes

We've had a dreary, rainy weekend.  Yesterday we drove to Saratoga Springs to spend some time in Barnes and Nobles.  This is our favorite rainy day activity.  It only took about an hour to get there because we had a delay near the outlet center, traffic was bumper to bumper.  But we drove on through and jumped on the interstate.

Soon we arrived at our destination.  But first we needed some food to sustain us!  After lunch at a 99 Restaurant (

We do have sunshine now but there are still some clouds out there.  Of course with the rain we've had cooler temperatures and right now it's 66 degrees at 1800.  Should be great for sleeping!

We just watched Robin Hood: Prince of Peace with Kevin Costner.  I love anything to  do with Robin Hood.  Alan Rickman was perfect for the role of the Sheriff!

Hope y'all had a good weekend

What were you doing a year ago?

Checking back I see we were still in South Florida, staying with Sonsearae and Chris....Jim got his new iPad and we were starting a month of no spending.  Not a bad idea, perhaps we should do that now!

Towards the middle of the month a raccoon entertained me click here to see that post.  And I made a discovery about pine cones

Summertime in south Florida is spent mostly indoors unless you're a water rat and have a boat.  Apparently cold food was on my mind as I posted a recipe for Peach Freezer Jam....still haven't made any!

Jim has been working, helping Scotty with his projects regarding the workshop and apartment.  He's still napping most days

Anne made this flag from a pallet.  She had to make a template from cardboard to paint the stars on...had it ready and all set up for the Fourth of July

She's also made some tiny doors for the fairies

And I'm pretty sure she made this gourd birdhouse that's hanging in the tree.  She's a pretty crafty lady!

These day lilies are beautiful!

Finally!

We had two deer stroll through and I only managed to get three pictures and this is the best one....not that great

But I've been looking and watching for them!  Perhaps they'll be back

I Love This View

I have this lovely view to start my day.  When I get up in the morning I open the door and this is what I see

This is our second summer here and we plan on leaving earlier than our last visit

This was the view in October 2014.  We saw a lot of Autumn color before we headed south.  A rare treat for us.

We're still here

We've settled into the same routine we have whenever we sit still.  I have daily chores of dishes, laundry and cleaning and the days run into weeks of the same thing over and over.  Jim has days when he works to much and then takes several days to recover.  Most days he takes a nap

The chipmunks entertain us daily!  So tiny

Rose Breasted Grosbeak....there must be a half dozen pairs flitting around...the females are not this colorful

Every Thursday Fair Haven has concerts in the park.  We've gone the past three weeks and heard Jazz, 60's tribute and country.  The group above is Mellow Yellow performing the music from the 60's.  There's no charge to attend, you get a door prize ticket and sometimes there's free ice cream (Jim loves this!).

All of these flowers are on the property.
